Embracing the cosy season

Update your home with eight hot interior design trends

With temperatures dropping and nights getting darker, it’s only natural to want to change the décor in your home.  Matching the change in season, the desire for cosiness and a calming atmosphere are high on the agenda.  This season, its all about warmth and comfort with a little bit of drama.

Colour – it’s time to embrace the colours of autumn and winter, and it’s the easiest way to get cosy at home! Deep greens, inky blues and rich plums are the shades of the season. Dark, dramatic and moody, these colours create an intimate environment that is perfect for all scenarios; entertaining, curling up on the couch with a book or watching TV. Don’t be afraid to delve into dark colours and even paint both the walls and ceilings the same colour, creating an indulgent and sumptuous snug. Try Adventurer from Little Greene, Beverly, a new shade from Farrow & Ball, or Ink from Neptune.

Monochrome magic – blends of black and white is a classic combination that works so well in the winter months.  The dramatic darkness of black teamed with soft white shades is both bold and beautiful in all rooms, from bathrooms to bedrooms and lounges.  Habitat currently has a great selection of affordable monochrome soft furnishings such as lamps, rugs and cushions. Or visit C.P. Hart in Wilmslow for luxury black and white bathroom inspiration, with a choice of striking tiles, contemporary baths and toilets, fixtures as well as stunning vanity units.

Walnut – the wood we should all be investing in for our homes.  Solid and stylish, it takes centre stage in any room, and with its different tones brings a richness to any space.  Opt for a striking drinks cabinet and let that be the talking point, or perhaps pick a modern media unit that is sure to impress.  For distinctive design-led pieces of furniture at fair prices, look at Swoon Editions.

Sculptural shapes – a cost efficient way to dress any space is through soft furnishings – vases, candle holders, jugs etc…  In fact, today’s trend is to have a selection of statement pieces perfectly placed on sideboards or shelves to form a creative look.  Sculptural, Scandi, figurative and bubble-inspired, the high street is full of fantastic items in a mix of materials from ceramics and stone to iridescent glass and wood that add a little bit of fun.  Check out Next Home, H&M Home and The White Company.

Lighting – for the ultimate cosy feel in any room, low-level decorative lighting is a must have.  Bedside lamps, table lamps, floors lamps and wall lights all provide the much desired mellow light in an evening, which in turn creates a charming, calm and chilled vibe.  Visit Altrincham’s Rose & Grey showroom to see an amazing collection of lights in all shapes, sizes, styles and materials.

Curtains – often forgotten about, or an afterthought, but it’s important to choose curtains wisely because dressing a window can really influence the look of a room.  During winter months, heavy fabrics such a velvet, instantly adds texture and depth, as well as providing a truly luxurious feel. Why not book a home consultation with Laurel House Interiors in Lymm and invest in some beautiful bespoke curtains.

Rugs – what better way to create cosiness than to add a rug to a room. Hard-wearing, practical and sumptuous, rugs offer texture underfoot.  To elevate a room or completely transform the décor, rugs are an important part of any interior design.  With comfort at home a key trend currently, pick an oversized rug with muted colours and pair with a large sofa and plump armchairs for an elegant living room. Or, go contemporary with a bold pattern or super soft luxury with deep pile wool. Look at Loaf, Soho Home or Ruggable for designer inspiration.

Bouclé – perhaps the best way to add cosy texture, curves and comfort to your home.  A popular fabric choice for sofas and armchairs, but as this trends continues to impress, the woven fabric can be seen more around the home, from a dining room chair to a bedroom pouffe.  Typically a neutral off-white or cream colour, this winter watch out for bright bursts of bouclé.  Take a trip to Arighi Bianchi to see their bouclé knot cushions in blue, burnt orange and grey.

With developments currently in Lymm and Altrincham in Cheshire as well as Adel in Yorkshire, providing a range of property types including bungalows, apartments and townhouses, Villafont is renowned for its exceptional design, exacting build standards and immaculate attention to detail.  For further information, please click here.
